Stitching Memory: Archive in Motion

A Square in Motion reimagines Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, as a continuous civic edge that holds memory, activates community and responds to climate. Inspired by the movement of a thread through fabric, the landscape is stitched together from moments of gathering, expression and reflection.

The design follows the protest cycle: arrival, preparation, briefing, departure and return. Each stage becomes a space with its own atmosphere, from open, porous edges and soft light to shaded work surfaces, focused enclosures and places of release.

Layers of use, traces of protest and acts of care build a living archive in the landscape, so the ground itself remembers.
