Cwenga Yake
Architectural Designer
Architectural designer with a strong interest in creating spaces that connect culture, identity and community. My design approach explores how architecture can preserve memory while responding to contemporary needs. I work across conceptual development, spatial planning, visual communication and digital representation, with a growing interest in developing thoughtful and context-driven architectural solutions.
Manifesto
Remembrance, Resistance, Empower
Architecture serves as a medium for preserving culture, identity, and collective memory. It is a tool that brings people together, a spatial language that gives voice to the silenced and creates platforms for empowerment and celebration. Through architecture, I challenge colonial spatial systems while uncovering the stories of the women behind the men, confronting patriarchal structures embedded within African cultural spaces. My work questions inherited spatial hierarchies and reimagined environments that acknowledge overlooked narratives.
I stand for social justice. Having grown up in communities where architecture often reflects stripped identity and historical displacement, I seek to design spaces that restore dignity and reconnect people with their cultural heritage.
Materiality and light become essential storytelling elements. They guide movement, rituals, and lived experience, allowing architecture itself to speak the stories of the unheard. In this way, space becomes both remembrance and resistance.
I see architecture as a tool for healing cultural erasure, an opportunity to imagine futures where diverse cultures, histories, and genders are recognised, celebrated, and empowered.
